About the Artist

'A Queer Pilgrimage’ is an ongoing project from artist's El Lanham and Tom Maryniak that explores LGBTQ+ history through screen print based illustrations.

Inspired by their interests in printmaking, history and storytelling, the pilgrimage spans hundreds of years, transporting us from public demonstrations, such as The Gay Liberation Front’s first march in 1970, to the Dilly Boys of Piccadilly, with stories ranging from the bleak to the bawdy.

The Rainbow Collective is delighted to partner with ‘A Queer Pilgrimage’ to supply fine art print reproductions of their beautiful artworks.

A groundbreaking footballer in many ways, Justin Fashanu was, at the height of his career, the country’s most expensive black footballer. Having already played for a number of clubs he sent shockwaves through the football world in 1990 after The Sun ran the headline - ‘£1m Football Star: I AM GAY’.

After coming out Fashanu realised he was not fully prepared for the backlash that followed. He was the first, and up until this year (2022), the only professional footballer to be openly gay. Fashanu moved to the United States and in 1998 was accused of sexual assault - he was charged - a time when homosexual acts were illegal in the US State of Maryland and, fearing he would not get a fair trial he fled back to England where he hanged himself in a disused lock-up in Fairchild Place, Shoreditch. In his suicide note he stated that the sex was consensual and he feared he would not get a fair trial because of his homosexuality and that he didn’t want to bring further embarrassment to his friends and family.

Frequently asked questions

How does our quality compare?

Where competitors might cut corners, we use heavyweight fine art paper, with a luxurious matte finish.

Our paper is sustainably sourced from Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests.

The Unframed option is print only & arrives trimmed & frame ready

What is the difference between Standard and Premium Frames?

Simply put, our standard frames use pine and our premium frames use oak or ash (depending on the colour selection).

Both are crafted from responsibly sourced wood providing natural elegance that complements a variety of artistic styles.

How long will my print last?

We use museum-quality materials. Under normal indoor conditions, your artwork is designed to last for decades without noticeable fading.

While no print should be placed in prolonged direct sunlight, our inks and materials offer excellent resistance to light exposure.

How easy is it to hang the prints?

Very easy. Our pieces arrive framed and ready to hang.
