Collection: BAS

Bas brings a neuroscientist’s curiosity to a painter’s love of colour. Born in the Netherlands and now based in the North East of England, he balances teaching and research with an art practice shaped by a fascination with how we see.

His coastlines, boats and buildings take shape through bold colour and simple geometry. A few angles become a lighthouse; a band of colour brings back the memory of somewhere familiar. Drawing on the North East’s coastal landmarks and the architecture of his Dutch homeland, he leaves room for the viewer to make their own connections.

There is a isolated stillness beneath the colour. Buildings stand alone against open horizons, while boats suggest movement and the passing of time. For Bas, these scenes speak to our desire to leave a mark and the fleeting nature of our lives. His paintings invite us to look a little longer, bringing both energy and reflection into the places we call home.
