After a decade working in a national library, Rob Field knows how to read between the lines. His archive also has a type: truckers, sportsmen, leather daddies and men in very small shorts.
Based in Yorkshire, England, Rob is a self-taught linocut printmaker who learned the medium during the pandemic before returning to independent creative practice. His years among collections give the work its archival pull. Vintage gay magazines, queer Americana, retro sportswear and the codes of leather and cruising culture are recut through a bold contemporary graphic style.
Rob is interested in the private language of gay desire. Some encounters happen in public; others unfold within domestic life. The men may remain anonymous, but their intimacy is never invisible. Those who recognise the language are welcomed in. Everyone else is left enough room to wonder.
Each design begins by hand before Rob transfers it to linoleum and gradually reveals the image by carving away its negative space. The process suits his subjects: what he withholds can carry as much charge as what he shows.
In his debut collection for The Rainbow Collective, pride and privacy are allowed to share the same room. It never has to explain itself - and never behaves so well that it stops being fun.
