About the Artist

Konstantin Somov was a Russian painter and illustrator whose work turns beauty into something sly, theatrical and charged. Associated with the Mir Iskusstva movement, he helped shape a world of artifice: Rococo interiors, masked figures, powdered faces, private rooms and desire hiding just beneath the silk.

Born in Saint Petersburg in 1869, Somov trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts and later worked between Russia and Paris. His art often feels like a dream of the past, but never a polite one. Beneath the lace, flowers and antique glamour, there is tension: bodies being watched, identities being performed, pleasure made visible.

Somov’s queerness was not just biographical; it shaped the atmosphere of his work. His drawings and paintings often carry same-sex eroticism, coded intimacy and a fascination with the drama of looking.
