About the Artist

Glyn Warren Philpot was a British painter and sculptor whose work moved between society portraiture, religious symbolism and intimate studies of male beauty. Born in London in 1884, he trained at Lambeth School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris before becoming one of the most successful portraitists of his generation. By the 1920s, Philpot was a Royal Academician, painting aristocrats, writers, performers and cultural figures with a polished, theatrical eye.

Beneath that public success was a more private artistic world. Philpot’s later work became increasingly modern, sensual and emotionally direct, often returning to the male figure with tenderness and complexity.

In a period when desire had to be coded, his portraits and figure studies offered quiet acts of recognition. His shift away from conventional society portraiture unsettled parts of the art establishment, but today it feels like the most compelling part of his legacy: elegant, searching and beautifully unafraid of intimacy.

Painted in 1921, Journey of the Spirit shows three nude male figures striding across a stark, dreamlike landscape. Philpot turns the body into symbol: heroic, vulnerable and searching.

Its muscular forms echo Michelangelo, but the mood feels less biblical than inward, a private passage through desire, faith and self-knowledge. For a gay Catholic artist in interwar Britain, such imagery offered a coded way to honour male beauty and spiritual longing without naming either too plainly.
