About the Artist

Louise Abbéma was a French Belle Époque painter, illustrator and decorator whose work made femininity feel luminous, theatrical and self-possessed. Born into an artistic Parisian circle, she trained with leading painters of the period and rose to prominence in the 1870s with her celebrated portrait of Sarah Bernhardt.

Bernhardt became Abbéma’s great muse, collaborator and lifelong intimate companion, appearing across her portraits, sculptures and decorative works. Their relationship sat at the centre of a creative world built on performance, beauty and devotion.

Abbéma moved confidently through public life: exhibiting at the Salon, creating portraits of cultural figures, designing decorative panels, and earning major recognition, including the Légion d’honneur. At a time when women artists were often pushed to the margins, she made herself visible.

Her art is all flowers, theatre, silk and gaze, but never passive. Beneath the Belle Époque elegance is a life lived with style, independence and quiet defiance.

Louise Abbéma’s Panneau Décoratif: Allégorie du Printemps (1902) turns spring into a soft, flower-drenched apparition. Held by the Musée d’Orsay, this oil on canvas shows an allegorical young woman framed by blossoms, gauze and a garden arch: less portrait than season made flesh. No known lover or sitter is attached; the queer charge sits with Abbéma herself. A celebrated Belle Époque painter, decorator and portraitist, she lived openly as a lesbian and built beauty on her own terms - floral, feminine and quietly ungovernable.
