About the Artist

Andy Sylvester is a studio-based painter from Cheltenham, UK, whose work explores queer identity through portraiture. Drawing inspiration from social media and the democratisation of photography, particularly the rise of the ‘selfie’ he transforms found and personal images into bold acrylic works focused on colour, line, and narrative.

His process involves printing, layering, and reworking images over time, often sanding back and rebuilding to find new meaning. Andy’s work reflects on how queer people present themselves to the world and challenges traditional ideas of masculinity and representation. Through his art, he aims to both celebrate and spotlight the full spectrum of LGBTQ+ culture.
