About the Artist

Simeon Solomon was a British Jewish artist associated with the Pre-Raphaelites and the Aesthetic Movement. Born in London in 1840, he came from an artistic family and entered the Royal Academy Schools as a teenager. His early work drew praise for its delicate line, spiritual atmosphere and unusual sensitivity, moving between biblical subjects, Jewish ritual, classical myth and dreamlike figures.

Solomon’s art often feels suspended between devotion and desire. His figures are androgynous, inward-looking and charged with a quiet intensity that made his work distinct within Victorian art. In 1873 and 1874, his career was devastated by arrests and convictions for homosexual offences, after which he was largely rejected by the establishment.

Yet he continued to draw and paint, creating images of beauty, longing and spiritual ambiguity long after society had tried to erase him. Today, Solomon’s work feels hauntingly modern: fragile, defiant and deeply alive to the inner worlds people were not allowed to name.

Simeon Solomon’s Sappho and Erinna in a Garden at Mytilene (1864) is sapphic history made tenderly visible. Held by Tate, this watercolour shows the ancient Greek poets Sappho and Erinna seated in a garden on Lesbos, their faces touching in an intimate kiss.

The figures are literary, not portrait sitters, but the charge is unmistakable: women’s love placed at the centre of beauty. Solomon, a Jewish Pre-Raphaelite artist later punished for homosexual acts, gives queer desire a lineage - classical, romantic and impossible to erase.
