About the Artist

John Douglas is an award-winning Australian multimedia artist whose exhibitions have received critical acclaim and caused controversy both in his home country and internationally.

Douglas was expelled from the Queensland College of Art for being a “disruptive and disturbing influence”. More than four decades later, he is still making work on his own terms. His radical act now is to paint happiness.

Across changes in subject and style, John's distinctive saturated colour and expressive brushwork create a cohesive collection. It takes us into a world that’s humorous, innocent, sensual and gently subversive.

This is a space that reeks of history, personality and stories it is under no obligation to repeat. Douglas’s broad brushwork makes the walls and floor feel materially present, while the skewed perspective heightens the sense of entering someone else’s private world. Domestic décor becomes character, invitation and knowing accomplice.
