About the Artist

Dame Ethel Walker was a Scottish-born British painter whose work gave women rare centrality, presence and inner life. Born in Edinburgh in 1861, she trained in London at institutions including the Slade School of Fine Art, and became the first woman elected to the New English Art Club in 1900. She went on to exhibit widely, represent Britain at the Venice Biennale, and receive a Damehood in 1943.

Walker painted portraits, flowers, seascapes and decorative compositions, but her most distinctive legacy lies in her depictions of women. Her sitters often appear thoughtful, self-contained and vividly alive, while her female nudes and mythic scenes resist the passive softness expected of women in art. She once rejected the idea of being judged as a “woman artist,” insisting there were only good and bad artists. Today, her work feels bold, intimate and quietly defiant: a lifelong argument for women as subjects, creators and worlds unto themselves.

In Memories of Jamaica, Ethel Walker turns landscape into recollection: lush, warm and emotionally charged rather than documentary. No sitter, lover or muse is recorded; the intimacy lies in memory itself, a private vision carried through colour. Walker was celebrated for seascapes, still lifes and above all women-centred subjects, and her wider practice often imagined female presence outside male drama. Read beside those all-female worlds, this Jamaican memory feels like escape, sensuality and self-possession held in one bright breath.
